Bone grafts and gum care before implants

Not every mouth is ready for implants. Gum disease has to be treated first, and some jaws need more bone. We find out on the scan and the exam, and we tell you before you decide.

Dr. Booker, a general dentist, looks after your gums. Dr. Leung places small bone grafts. Larger grafts and sinus lifts go to an oral surgeon outside the practice.

What happens

Usually one to three extra visits and several months of healing before implants, when your case needs it.

  1. 01

    Step 1: Gum check

Dr. Booker measures your gums, takes X-rays when needed and tells you what she finds.

  2. 02

    Step 2: Cleaning and treatment

A deep cleaning when your gums call for it, and a recheck. Implants wait until your gums are healthy.

  3. 03

    Step 3: The scan

The 3D scan shows how much bone you have and where.

  4. 04

Step 4: Bone graft, if needed

Dr. Leung places a small graft at the time of an extraction or implant, or refers a larger one.

  5. 05

    Step 5: Healing and recheck

The graft takes months to heal. A new scan shows whether the site is ready for the implant.

Comfort, choices and care

  • Comfort

We numb the area for any grafting, and you can ask for a break. A referral visit has its own plan for comfort.

  • Other choices

A shorter implant, fewer implants, a denture or a bridge on natural teeth. Not every case needs a graft.

  • If you wait

Bone keeps shrinking after a tooth is lost, so the choice can get harder with time. Gum disease can also get worse.

  • Risks and after-care

Risks include infection, graft material that does not take, swelling and bruising. Expect soft food and careful cleaning, with a follow-up visit.

  • How it is billed

In stages, as each is done, with a written estimate first. Referred care is billed by the practice that provides it.

Questions about bone and gum care

Will I need a bone graft?

The scan shows. Many cases do not need one, and we tell you if yours does.

Where does the graft material come from?

From a tissue bank or a manufactured material, or from your own bone. Dr. Leung explains the options for your case.

Can I have implants if I have gum disease?

Only after it is treated and stays under control. Dr. Booker checks your gums, and we plan around what she finds.
